Impressive Results Presented at the South Carolina
KeyTrain Users Webinar
KeyTrain users
continue to show impressive results in South
Carolina – a fact that was very clear on October 16th
during the KeyTrain Users Webinar. New results in
special education, WIA, technical colleges and high
schools were presented during the online seminar.
Lisa Halter,
Transition Specialist and Career and Technical
Education Director, at Lexington
School District Four, discussed the success of KeyTrain with
the special education population. Halter explained
how the integration of KeyTrain with at risk and
special needs students has been an ongoing focus for
several years. The use of KeyTrain with special
education students at Swansea High School in School
District Lexington 4 has resulted in other school
districts in South Carolina implementing KeyTrain as
well.
Brenda Odom,
Program Manager in Workforce Development, at York
Technical College shared the success of the Career
Ready class which consists of 50 hours of training
for WIA eligible participants. Odom explained that
the purpose of the class is to provide basic skills
assessment, remediation and career-enhancing
behaviors to job seekers in Chester, York and
Lancaster counties. The Career Ready class at York
Technical College is an example of a community
partnership between the college and WIA to prepare
the workforce.
Vickie Tyner,
Executive Director of the Pee Dee WIB discussed the
implementation of the KeyTrain initiative that began in
2007 with a grant funded through the South Carolina
Department of Commerce. The grant allowed KeyTrain
to be available at 18 high schools in the Pee Dee Region
of South Carolina. As part of the Pee Dee KeyTrain
initiative over 3,000 freshmen were assessed in
spring 2007 and will be reassessed in 2009. Over
200 administrators and teachers have been trained on
how to integrate KeyTrain into the South Carolina
high school curriculum.
